FAQ

Have you always been a writer?
I’ve always wanted to write, I’ve started many novels in the past, but I never followed through with them and finished the story. As a young girl, I had a deep desire to become a famous actress. I loved reading, although it would take me awhile to get through a book, simply because when a chapter inspired me, I would memorize it and act it out in my bedroom. I know what I experienced on stage, or on camera, contributes to my writing.

When and where do you write?
I write any chance I can get. Right now, I have an area in my apartment where I have my laptop. I wake up very early every day and I use that time to write. When I come home from work, I write. On the weekends, I write. I’m always writing. And when I’m not sitting at my computer, I keep a little notebook with me, because inspiration is everywhere.

Who are your favorite authors? Who inspires you?
I have many favorite authors, the ones who inspired me to become a writer are Jackie Collins, Nora Roberts and LaVyrle Spencer. In fact, I have an autographed picture of Jackie Collins in a frame on my desk. It’s personalized to me, and any time I’m feeling discouraged, I look at Jackie smiling at me and I feel like she’s nudging me along.

What’s your favorite book?
There are many books that I’ve read numerous times, but the one that I seem to read over and over is Twice Loved by LaVyrle Spencer. It’s beautiful, and frustrating, and full of love, sorrow and conflict. But the characters grip me every single time. It’s been a few months since I’ve read it, maybe it’s time to read it again!

How did you come up with the idea for Heart & Soul?
The idea for Heart & Soul came to me when I was reading another book. It was a biography about a rock and roll band and their rise to fame. I started to remember my dreams of being a famous actress and thought about what I would have done if I was on my rise to fame, and this bad boy came into my life. Then the characters started to develop, and one thought led to another and to another. So much so, I originally thought I had enough for a trilogy, but when it kept evolving, I realized I wanted to write a series.

How many books are in the series?
There are 10 books in the series. Possibly more, because my characters keep me awake at night and give me great material.

Did a celebrity inspire any of your characters?
Yes. The book that I was reading that sparked my creativity was a biography about Guns N’ Roses. Axl Rose has always intrigued me and when I knew my leading man was going to be a world-famous rock star, I couldn’t think of anyone other than Mr. Rose. He epitomizes rock star in my eyes. And it’s important to me that my readers know Slater Heart was inspired by Axl Rose. The story is not about Axl, he simply inspired me to write a bad boy with a soft side, and they look a lot alike, too!

What about Alexandra Lorraine? Who was your inspiration for her?
Alexandra Lorraine is inspired by many people. I think of old school Hollywood glamour icons, idols from the 80’s and 90’s and current ingenues when I think of Alex. Although, if I had to choose an actress to play Alexandra in the film, it would be Nina Dobrev.

Will there be other books besides the Heart & Soul series?
Yes! I recently finished writing The Art of Zen. It's an opposites attract romance about an artist and a successful businessman in New York City. It will be published in the fall of 2020.

Are you still writing your beauty blog?
Oh, my beauty blog! Yes, I'm still writing on my blog. I stepped away from it for a few years, but I've been more active on it lately with product reviews and interviews. It's so much fun and I'm happy to be adding more content to it on a regular basis. Check it out if you want: brookeknowsbeauty.wordpress.com

Why didn’t you write a beauty book?
Good question! With the blog gaining momentum like it was, you would think a beauty book would be an obvious choice. I’ve thought about it, but I’m not sure what my main focus would be for a beauty book. It doesn’t mean it won’t happen, but for now, nothing is in the works.

I’ve got a great idea for a story, but I’m not sure how to put it all together? Would you help me?
Unfortunately, I don’t have time to collaborate because I’m so focused on my writing. Also, I don’t think I would know how to tell someone else’s story and not try to make it my own.

Can you help me self-publish?
I can’t help you self-publish, but I will try to answer any questions you may have. There is so much information out there and so many ways to do it. My husband, who is also my manager, did tons of research on how to self-publish. We took the knowledge that we gained and used what felt right to us.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
I believe we all have a story inside of us, and if you’re diligent and focused, your motivation will come. There is no secret ingredient. You just need to write. And believe me when I tell you, if I can do it, you can do it!

Will you sign a book for me?
